PEER RECOVERY SUPPORT SPECIALIST

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Peer Recovery Support Specialist provides direct, non-clinical recovery support services to individuals affected by substance use disorders. Drawing upon personal lived experience in recovery, the Peer Recovery Support Specialist serves as a mentor, advocate, coach, and resource navigator, helping participants identify and achieve their recovery goals. This position delivers peer mentoring, recovery coaching, group facilitation, resource coordination, and community outreach to promote long-term recovery, wellness, and community integration.
The Peer Recovery Support Specialist plays a vital role in fostering a recovery-oriented system of care by building trusting relationships, reducing barriers to services, encouraging self-sufficiency, and connecting participants with community resources. This position supports all pathways of recovery and provides person-centered services in a manner that promotes dignity, hope, empowerment, and participant choice.
The Peer Recovery Support Specialist serves individuals pursuing recovery through all pathways of recovery, including but not limited to clinical treatment, medication-assisted recovery, mutual aid support groups, faith-based recovery, and self-directed recovery. Services shall be provided in a manner that respects participant choice, promotes self-determination, and supports individualized recovery goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct Peer Support Services:
- Provide one-on-one peer support, mentoring, and recovery coaching to individuals in recovery or seeking recovery.
- Utilize personal lived experience to inspire hope, model recovery, and assist participants in developing individualized recovery goals.
- Build trusting, supportive relationships that encourage personal growth, accountability, and sustained recovery.
- Assist participants in developing recovery plans and action steps designed to support long-term stability and wellness.
- Conduct participant intake, needs assessments, and follow-up contacts in accordance with program policies and grant requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with participants to monitor progress, address barriers, and celebrate recovery milestones.
Resource Navigation and Advocacy:
- Assist participants in identifying and accessing community resources, including housing, employment, transportation, healthcare, education, legal services, childcare, and social supports.
- Advocate for participants when appropriate and help them navigate complex service systems.
- Accompany participants, when appropriate, to appointments, community services, recovery meetings, and other recovery-related activities.
- Support participants in building recovery capital and increasing self-sufficiency.
Group Facilitation and Community Engagement:
- Facilitate peer-led support groups, recovery-focused workshops, educational sessions, and recovery activities.
- Conduct outreach activities to engage individuals who may benefit from recovery support services and increase awareness of available resources.
- Assist with community education efforts, recovery celebrations, awareness campaigns, and special events.
- Represent the Recovery Community Center at community meetings, outreach events, and partner activities as assigned.
Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care:
- Support and encourage individuals pursuing recovery through all pathways of recovery without preference or bias toward any particular treatment modality, recovery philosophy, or support model.
- Promote participant self-determination by helping individuals identify and pursue recovery goals that align with their personal values, beliefs, and recovery journey.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, recovery-focused environment where participants feel respected, supported, and empowered.
- Promote a culture of recovery, hope, dignity, inclusion, and participant empowerment.
Documentation and Program Support:
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential participant records, case notes, and program documentation.
- Collect, track, and report participant outcomes and program data as required by organizational policies and grant requirements.
- Participate in staff meetings, supervision sessions, training opportunities, and professional development activities.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners, treatment providers, recovery organizations, employers, and social service agencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the Recovery Community Center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Lived experience in recovery from a substance use disorder and willingness to appropriately utilize that experience in a professional setting.
- Kentucky Certified Peer Support Specialist certification or ability to obtain certification within a timeframe established by the organization.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and participant confidentiality.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, data entry, electronic recordkeeping, and virtual communication platforms.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current Kentucky Certified Peer Support Specialist credential.
- At least two (2) years of sustained personal recovery.
- Experience working in peer support, behavioral health, recovery services, social services, or community outreach.
- Knowledge of recovery resources and service systems throughout Northeastern Kentucky.
- Experience facilitating groups, workshops, educational sessions, or recovery meetings.
- Experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders, mental health challenges, homelessness, justice involvement, or other barriers to recovery.

- Knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, and recovery-oriented systems of care.
- Knowledge of and commitment to supporting all pathways of recovery.
- Ability to engage individuals from diverse backgrounds with empathy, respect, and cultural sensitivity.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, staff, community partners, and stakeholders.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires a combination of office-based work, participant engagement, community outreach, and travel throughout the service area. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist will regularly meet with participants in community settings, partner agencies, recovery meetings, treatment facilities, and other locations conducive to recovery support services.
The position may require occasional evening and weekend hours to accommodate participant needs, recovery activities, outreach efforts, and community events.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and move throughout community settings for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to travel throughout the service region.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, printers, telephones, and mobile devices.
- Ability to safely transport oneself to participant meetings, outreach activities, and partner locations.

The Peer Recovery Support Specialist is a mission-critical position responsible for helping individuals build recovery capital, strengthen community connections, access essential services, and achieve sustained recovery. Through lived experience, mentorship, advocacy, resource navigation, and encouragement, the Peer Recovery Support Specialist serves as a source of hope while helping create a recovery-oriented community where individuals and families can thrive.
This position is essential to establishing and sustaining a recovery-oriented support system within the Boyd County Recovery Community Center and ensuring consistent, person-centered peer recovery services throughout the duration of the grant and beyond.
